They can affect your confidence, limit the activities you enjoy and make walking or sports uncomfortable. Our verruca treatment service is designed to reduce pain, clear the lesion where possible and help stop it from spreading.
We offer a range of treatment options, including topical treatments such as salicylic acid, Verrutop, cryotherapy and Falkner’s needling. We will discuss each option with you and mutually decide on the most appropriate way forward.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
1. Comprehensive Assessment
Your podiatrist will begin by:
- Taking a detailed medical and foot health history
- Asking when the verruca first appeared and what treatments you’ve already tried
- Discussing your symptoms, activity levels and any impact on daily life or sports
- Examining the verruca/ verrucae, surrounding skin and checking for any signs of spreading
- Assessing skin type, circulation and sensation to ensure treatments are safe for you
This helps us confirm the diagnosis and understand which treatment options are most suitable.
2. Clear Diagnosis and Conservative Care
We will:
- Explain in plain language what a verruca is and how it develops
- Show you the affected areas and discuss the likelihood of spontaneous resolution
- Provide advice on reducing spread (to yourself and others), including hygiene and footwear tips
- Scalpel debride any hard skin over the verruca lesion to reduce pain.
Treatment Options
If your verruca is painful, persistent or not responding to simpler measures, we may recommend:
Topical Salicylic Acid
Applied to gradually break down the verruca tissue.
Verrutop
A targeted topical treatment applied in‑clinic, designed to chemically destroy verruca tissue with minimal damage to surrounding skin.
Cryotherapy
- Freezing the verruca with a cold agent to damage the abnormal tissue
- May require a course of treatments at set intervals
Falkner’s Needling
- A minor needling procedure (under local anaesthetic) designed to stimulate your immune system to recognise and clear the virus
- Often suitable for stubborn, long‑standing verrucae
