Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis)
Fungal nails are a very common problem that can affect one or several toenails. They often become thickened, discoloured (yellow, brown or white), brittle, crumbly or distorted in shape. You may also notice an odour, debris under the nail, or discomfort in shoes as the nail thickens.
How We Assess Fungal Nails
Your podiatrist will:
- Examine the appearance and thickness of your nails and surrounding skin
- Ask how long the problem has been present and whether it is spreading
- Check for related skin infections such as athlete’s foot
- Consider other causes of nail changes (trauma, psoriasis, footwear pressure, medical conditions)
If needed, we may take a nail clipping or sample for laboratory testing to confirm a fungal infection and identify the type, helping us choose the most appropriate treatment.
Treatment Options
Fungal nails can be stubborn, but with a clear plan they can usually be improved and managed.
Reduce and Thin the Nail
- Gently trim and file the nail with specialist instruments
- Reduce thickness to relieve pressure in footwear
- Improve appearance and help treatments penetrate more effectively
- Arrange periodic appointments to keep nails thin, smooth and comfortable
Topical Antifungal Treatments
- Recommend suitable medicated lacquers, solutions or creams
- Show you how and when to apply them
- Explain realistic timeframes (often several months)
Oral Antifungal Medication
- If appropriate, advise you to discuss prescription tablets with your GP
- Help you weigh benefits and possible side effects
- Work alongside your GP to support and monitor progress where needed
Long‑Term Management
In long‑standing or severe cases, complete cure may not be possible, especially if the nail is badly damaged or there are underlying health issues. We focus on:
- Keeping the nail as comfortable and healthy‑looking as possible
- Controlling infection to prevent spread to other nails or skin
- Setting up regular review and nail care if required
Your podiatrist will explain likely outcomes, set realistic expectations and agree a treatment and maintenance plan that fits your lifestyle.
