Thickened/Damaged Nails

Restoring Comfort and Appearance to Compromised Nails

Many people struggle with toenails that are thick, misshapen, damaged or too hard to cut safely. This may be due to age, injury, fungal infection, tight footwear or underlying health conditions, and can cause discomfort in shoes, snagging on socks or pain when walking.

How We Assess Nail Problems

At your appointment, your podiatrist will:

  • Examine the shape, thickness and condition of each nail
  • Check the surrounding skin for irritation, infection or pressure
  • Ask about your medical history, medications and any nail trauma
  • Look for signs of fungal infection, circulation problems or reduced sensation

If needed, we may arrange further tests (e.g. fungal analysis) or liaise with your GP.

Treatment and Nail Care

We provide safe, gentle care tailored to your nails:

  • Cut and file nails that are difficult to manage at home
  • Smooth sharp or rough edges to reduce catching and splitting
  • Gently thin thickened nails with specialist tools
  • Relieve pressure in footwear and improve appearance
  • Help medicated treatments work more effectively if required
  • Assess bruised, lifted, split or repeatedly injured nails
  • Remove loose or unstable sections where appropriate
  • Protect the nail bed and advise on footwear and activity changes
  • Identify contributing factors such as footwear, foot shape, gait, fungal infection or medical conditions
  • Recommend suitable shoes, nail care techniques and protective devices
  • Discuss further treatment or referral if advanced care is needed

For many people, regular professional nail care is the safest and most comfortable option. We may recommend:

  • A routine schedule for cutting and thinning (e.g. every 6–12 weeks)
  • Monitoring for changes such as new pain, colour changes or signs of infection
  • Tailored advice on home nail care and moisturising

We take extra care if you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced feeling in your feet. Our aim is to keep your nails comfortable, manageable and as healthy‑looking as possible, while reducing the risk of complications and helping you stay active.
